A federation for Colombians abroad

Federación por Colombia en el Exterior (FECOEX) is an open, voluntary, independent federation established in 2009. It brings together associations, institutions, and organizations made up primarily of Colombians living outside Colombia. FECOEX promotes, coordinates, and supports its members' projects and activities and represents them when needed.

The federation began taking shape in March 2009 at the initiative of the Consulate of Colombia in Barcelona, which invited Colombian organizations in Catalonia to participate. Its work has focused on Catalonia, Spain, with a presence in Barcelona and coordination with associations in other Catalan towns.

In November 2011, FECOEX renewed its work and resumed its activities with the participation of these organizations:

Events and community activities

Documented initiatives include the First Meeting with the Colombian Diaspora of Health Experts, held in Barcelona on December 17, 2011, under the theme “A Contribution to Restructuring Colombia's Health and Social Security System: A Contribution from Colombians Abroad.” The event was organized with the Unión Profesional Iberoamericana de Cataluña (UPIAC) and the United States Colombians Medical Association (USCMA), with support from Colombia Nos Une, a program of Colombia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs; the Embassy of Colombia in Spain; and the Consulate General of Colombia in Barcelona.

The federation also called for demonstrations, including one held in Barcelona on December 6, 2011, under the slogan “Freedom for All Now!” to call for the release of hostages in Colombia. In 2010, it organized cultural events marking Colombia's bicentennial. The main event planned for Barcelona was canceled for administrative and political reasons, and some activities were moved to Girona, Tarragona, Reus, and Sant Cugat.
