About Arrels Fundació
Support for people experiencing homelessness
Arrels Fundació is a Barcelona social-services organization that has supported people experiencing homelessness in the city since 1987. Its work combines basic-needs assistance, social and health services, and housing for people in the most vulnerable situations, with the goal of helping them live as independently as possible.
Services and programs
The foundation organizes its work across several areas:
- Street outreach: teams visit and support people living in public spaces.
- Welcome and support: open-center services and direct assistance.
- Housing: programs that provide accommodation and help people access a home.
- Health and well-being: social and health care.
- Participation: activities and workshops.
- Rights advocacy: protects rights and speaks out about injustice.
- Aging and end-of-life support: accompanies people through older age and at the end of life.
Arrels also works on public awareness and policy advocacy and publishes reports, including “Living on the Streets in Barcelona (2025).”
Reported reach
The foundation reports that in 2026 it supported 2,656 people: 608 were visited by its street-outreach team, 2,028 used its open-center services, and 244 received housing. It also reports that more than 4,800 people in Barcelona are experiencing homelessness, including 1,982 who sleep outdoors.
How to help
Community members and businesses can support the foundation through donations, volunteering, fundraising events, and corporate volunteer programs. Options include sponsoring an apartment, funding open-center activities, organizing a fundraiser, or joining “Passejant junts,” a city walk led by someone who has experienced homelessness.
