Museu Picasso de Barcelona
A major Barcelona collection tracing Picasso’s formative years, housed in five Gothic palaces on Carrer de Montcada in the city’s old center.
About Museu Picasso de Barcelona
Picasso’s early years, set inside medieval Barcelona
The Museu Picasso tells an unusually close story of the artist’s development: its collection gives particular weight to the years when Picasso studied, worked, and found his footing in Barcelona. The museum grew from the collection donated by his friend and secretary Jaume Sabartés, then expanded through Picasso’s own gifts, including the series of paintings reworking Velázquez’s Las Meninas.
The galleries occupy five connected town palaces along Carrer de Montcada, a street whose courtyards, open stairways, and coffered ceilings make the architecture part of the encounter. Walking through the buildings means moving between Picasso’s artistic formation and the medieval and early-modern city around him. The museum is as much a portrait of Barcelona’s role in his life as it is a survey of the work he made.
