About Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau

A hospital with more than six centuries of history

Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau is a high-complexity medical center in Barcelona. Its origins date to March 15, 1401, when four city hospitals joined to establish Hospital de la Santa Creu, the foundation of today's institution. Its history includes medical milestones such as Spain's first successful heart transplant in 1984 and the country's first air-transport base for pediatric patients.

Patient care, research, and education

The hospital is a leading center in Catalonia for health care, research, and medical education. It is part of Campus Salut Barcelona, where patient care, research, and professional training come together. Its Institut de Recerca de Sant Pau includes a clean room for advanced-therapy research, including academic CAR T-cell therapies. The Campus d'Aprenentatge offers undergraduate and master's programs, vocational courses, and specialized health training.

Specialized care

Patient care is organized into clinical services and specialized teams for complex conditions. Areas include musculoskeletal care, aortic disease, spine surgery, sarcoma, sexually transmitted infections, diabetic foot, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, systemic autoimmune diseases, hidradenitis, heart failure, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), vascular anomalies, neuromuscular diseases, bariatric surgery, breast disease, pelvic-floor disorders, hepatocellular carcinoma, endometriosis, tuberculosis, rectal cancer, and reproductive loss, among others.

Technology and innovation

The hospital has a 3D unit to support complex surgery and a surgical suite equipped with advanced technology. It was the first center in Spain's public health system to adopt the da Vinci single-port system, placing it at the forefront of advanced robotic surgery. The hospital has also pioneered deep-brain stimulation for patients with treatment-resistant schizophrenia.

Patient services

Services include patient support, telephone appointments, directions, visiting information, 24-hour emergency care, patient guides, and resources for patients and caregivers. The hospital also handles requests for copies of medical records and reports, second medical opinions, physician changes, advance directives, and data-protection matters. It has a volunteer service and a program to make care spaces more welcoming.
