Organic food and community in La Sagrera

30 Panxes is an organic and locally sourced food cooperative in Barcelona’s La Sagrera neighborhood. Its 10th-anniversary celebration in October 2021 points to a founding around 2011. The cooperative distributes responsibly produced goods, mainly organic food, and organizes events to raise awareness and encourage neighborhood participation.

Activities and services

The cooperative runs a space for buying organic and locally sourced products. Its regular activities have included:

• Selling baskets of organic food. For example, an organic egg-and-potato basket was offered for a 2017 tortilla contest.
• Hosting talks and discussions on responsible agroecological consumption, including an April 2022 event titled “Alternatives for Responsible Agroecological Consumption,” with speakers Xavier Montagut of Xarxa de Consum Solidari and Núria Vega of Desvestint Aliments.
• Taking part in neighborhood events such as La Sagrera’s spring festival and annual Festa Major, where it sets up information tables and runs activities such as a tortilla contest.
• Offering information and educational activities about responsible consumption and food sovereignty, including talks about trade agreements such as the TTIP.

How the cooperative is organized

30 Panxes organizes its work through teams and committees, including groups focused on responsible consumption, education and information, administration and legal matters, and internal and external communications. It also uses member shifts and keeps assembly minutes, reflecting a participatory approach to management.
