About Afopa

Lifelong learning for older adults

Afopa is the Association of Lifelong Learning Classrooms for Older Adults of Catalonia. Founded in 1982, it brings together and coordinates university extension and cultural learning programs for older adults. Several Catalan universities provide academic support for its programs.

University partners

Afopa's interuniversity council includes nine Catalan universities that oversee its university extension classrooms: University of Barcelona (UB), Ramon Llull University (URL), University of Lleida (UDL), Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), University of Girona (UDG), Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona (URV), and University of Vic (UVIC).

History and programs

The organization marked its 40th anniversary and has continued its work since its founding. In 1992, AIUTA asked Afopa to organize its 16th International Congress, held at the University of Barcelona with more than 600 attendees. In 1997, the organization revised its bylaws and adopted its current name. Recent activities have included participating in the 2024 Saló de l'Ensenyament and presenting certificates at the Parliament of Catalonia to participants in the “Parlament i Ciutadania” workshop for the 2023–24 academic year.
