About El Tinglado

Architecture shaped by community

El Tinglado is a Barcelona cooperative working in architecture and technical services, community engagement, research and action, and urban planning. Its approach brings critical, cross-disciplinary analysis together with environmental and social sustainability, with an emphasis on practical solutions rooted in local communities.

Areas of work

  • Architecture and technical services: Designing spaces and supporting building renovation, with attention to the environment throughout a building's life cycle.
  • Community engagement: Facilitating collective processes and helping communities share responsibility, address intersecting needs, and work together.
  • Research and action: Developing and sharing knowledge from a critical perspective, with particular attention to inequality.
  • Urban planning and territory: Working at different scales, from public spaces to regional planning, guided by sustainability and the right to the city.

Projects across neighborhoods and regions

The cooperative's projects have included a community process to transform the Sanduzelai neighborhood, a study of life in cooperative housing, and an index tracking tourism pressure in Barcelona neighborhoods. Other work includes a rural innovation lab for farm diversification, research on commercial gentrification in Barcelona, improving access to Barcelona's Zona Franca district, and the redesign of Plaça de Can Baró.
