Destilerías Arehucas S.A.

Rum and spirits from Gran Canaria

Destilerías Arehucas S.A. is a family-owned Canary Islands company based in Arucas, Gran Canaria, Spain, that makes rum and spirits. Its history dates to August 9, 1884, when the Fábrica de San Pedro opened in Arucas, initially producing sugar and, to a lesser extent, sugarcane spirits and rum. The company adopted the name Destilerías Arehucas in 1965.

Products and brands

The company makes rum and spirits under the Ron Arehucas brand, historically known as “the one with the keys” because of the Saint Peter imagery on its labels. In 2006, it acquired Fábrica de Licores Artemi, forming what it describes as the Canary Islands’ largest spirits group. The portfolio also includes Carmela Gin and Artemi rum.

Distillery and visits

Arehucas says it has one of Europe’s largest and oldest rum cellars. Its Arucas facility welcomes more than 95,000 visitors a year and offers guided tours about the history of rum in the Canary Islands. The company publishes a 2026 calendar of public closures, including January 1 and 6, February 17, April 2 and 3, May 1 and 8, June 23 and 24 (closing at 11:30 a.m.), September 8 and 25, October 12, November 2, and December 8 and 25.

Markets and community

In addition to its Canary Islands business, Arehucas exports to more than 10 countries and aims to grow its presence in mainland Spain and internationally. It has an online store and a supplier locator for customers outside Spain. The company also operates Fundación Arehucas, which supports social-impact projects.
