Representing Galicia's animal-feed sector

Agafac is a regional professional association representing 25 animal-feed manufacturers in Galicia. Together, its members operate 36 production facilities and account for about 85% of the compound animal feed produced in the region. The association coordinates, represents, manages, promotes, and defends its members' professional interests at both the regional and national levels.

Member services and GALIS

Agafac provides members with legislative guidance, Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) plans, training and research and development programs, and a coordinated rapid-alert system. It also runs GALIS, a sector-wide system recognized and awarded in Spain that monitors incoming shipments and helps prevent unsuitable raw materials from entering the food chain.

GALIS includes approval of suppliers and warehouses, supplier and warehouse evaluations, and a restricted-access analytical database where sampling results are stored and available in real time. In 2024, GALIS collected 77 samples from ships, 596 from warehouses, and 331 from factories. The work included 6,025 nutritional-parameter determinations, 3,350 microbiological-parameter determinations, and 2,655 analyses for undesirable substances. Samples are collected at major Galician ports, including A Coruña, Marín, Vilagarcía, Ferrol, and Ribadeo, as well as inland locations.

Training and industry events

The association organizes and promotes training activities each year to strengthen expertise in the animal-feed industry. It also hosts Foro Galis. The 15th edition, held in 2026, brought together more than 150 professionals in A Coruña to discuss the future of the agrifood sector.

Fundación FITP

Agafac supports Fundación Instituto Tecnológico del Pienso (FITP), which works to professionalize all participants in the animal-feed supply chain. FITP is supported by 24 member companies, including suppliers of raw materials, machinery, technology, and services, as well as livestock producers, farmers, slaughterhouses, dairy processors, and public agencies. Honorary members include the Port Authority of A Coruña, USSEC, FOSS Ibérica, and Trouw Nutrition.
