About Grootbos Private Nature Reserve
Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, a luxury eco-reserve in the Cape
Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is a private nature reserve and five-star accommodation located near the southern tip of Africa, between mountains, forest and sea. It presents itself as a sustainable tourism destination that combines conservation, research and luxury hospitality across some 3,500 hectares of natural surroundings.
The reserve describes itself as a place where biodiversity, culture and natural heritage converge, and structures its offering around accommodation, guided experiences, food and wine, wellness and botanical outreach.
Accommodation: lodges and private villas
The accommodation offering is divided into three options. Forest Lodge has 16 spacious, beautifully decorated suites set between an ancient milkwood forest and areas of fynbos, with panoramic views. Garden Lodge, rebuilt and reopened in April 2022, features floor-to-ceiling windows, a lounge and a wine cellar. The private villas, two in total, with four and six bedrooms, offer views of Walker Bay and the fynbos-covered hills, with personalised services including a private chef, butler and private guide.
Guided experiences on the reserve
The experiences on offer include bird watching, 4x4 botanical tours, horse riding, whale watching, walks and hikes, shark cage diving, marine safari, coastal safari, scenic flights and an excursion to the southern tip of Africa. Boat cruises on the Lady Stanford River and a tour called Progressive Tourism are also offered.
Food and wine
The culinary offering is based on fresh ingredients sourced mostly from the reserve's organic farm, with menus ranging from beach picnics to gourmet à la carte dinners. The wine experience includes guided visits to nearby wine estates and sommelier-led pairings during dinner.
Wellness and connection with nature
The wellness programme combines spa treatments with immersive nature activities, designed to promote rest, balance and a connection with the surroundings. The reserve presents this dimension as an integral part of the stay.
The Grootbos Florilegium
The reserve is home to the Grootbos Florilegium, presented as Africa's first contemporary florilegium. It is a collection of botanical illustrations created by local and international artists depicting rare, threatened and charismatic plants of the reserve and its surroundings, and also includes insects, pollinators and other creatures associated with the flora.
Conservation, biodiversity and foundation
The material highlights several facts about the surroundings: 3,500 hectares of wilderness, 1,031 plant species — seven of them new to science discovered on site —, 100 endangered plant species, three milkwood forests over 1,000 years old and more than 23 mammal species. The Grootbos Foundation handles the social and conservation side, and the reserve presents itself as a world leader in sustainable tourism with international recognition.
Awards and seasonal offers
Among the awards and mentions that the reserve itself lists are Best Hotel in Africa 2025, Readers' Choice Award 2025, 2024 and 2023, Top 20 Resorts in the World 2022 and Best Hotel in South Africa - The Gold List 2022. The site announced a promotion linked to the Fynbos Superbloom, with discounts of up to 50% for South African residents on stays from May to September 2026.
