About Beyond Restaurant
Beyond Restaurant, seasonal fine dining in Constantia
Beyond Restaurant is a fine dining establishment located at Buitenverwachting Wine Estate, in Constantia (Cape Town). Its approach is built around ingredient provenance and seasonality, with a kitchen led by Executive Chef Sebastian Stehr and overseen by Peter Tempelhoff and Ashley Moss, of the FYN Group.
The restaurant has earned two Eat Out stars, two JHP Gourmet Guide plates and is listed on The World’s 50 Best Discovery. The dining room, with floor-to-ceiling windows, offers views over the vineyards and features a fireplace, creating an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere.
Produce philosophy and provenance
Beyond’s kitchen is based on ingredient provenance. The restaurant pays special attention to sourcing a diverse range of special raw produce: rare-breed meats, seasonal heirloom vegetables and artisanally crafted cheeses. This diversity seeks to showcase and celebrate unique varieties and flavours, beyond mass production.
The commitment to local sourcing underscores its dedication to smaller growers, farmers and producers who form part of a sustainable supplier ecosystem. The menu honours ingredients native to the Western Cape, sourced from the restaurant’s own indigenous garden, foraged from the nearby coast and supplied by local producers, with roots in ancient traditions and a deep connection to place.
Beverage programme
The beverage programme follows the same philosophy. Buitenverwachting wines express the character of the estate’s soils and vineyards, while cocktail and non-alcoholic pairings incorporate indigenous ingredients, garden-grown herbs, house-made infusions, fermentations and tinctures. The beverage and sommelier programme is led by Jennifer Hugé, of the FYN Group, recipient of the Eat Out Guide Patron Mixology Award.
Team and culture
The concept of family runs through all aspects of Beyond. The team is made up of long-standing partners and associates of Tempelhoff, such as Service & Beverage Director Jennifer Hugé and Executive Chef Sebastian Stehr, alongside new faces. It is a diverse and forward-thinking group that reflects the culture of the business: a multicultural and proactive team, committed to growth, excellence and raising the bar on fine dining in Cape Town.
Space and setting
Buitenverwachting is an iconic destination with heritage and family at its heart. Tempelhoff was drawn to the authenticity of the property, the feel of a working farm. The charm and hospitality of this family-run estate inspired the approach at Beyond: an elegant but unpretentious experience, where comfort and enjoyment are the primary objectives. The space pays homage to the setting by inviting the scenery into the restaurant, with sophisticated but restrained interiors that subtly reference the estate’s history and the understated nature of the food.
