Wisconsin Grant 2026–27: potential aid at UW, technical, or private colleges

The state grant is need-based and sector-specific; its cap differs across UW, technical, private, and tribal institutions.

Wisconsin Grant is state grant aid for residents with financial need attending a participating institution. There is no single cap: HEAB publishes separate formulas for UW universities, technical colleges, private nonprofit institutions, and tribal colleges. This matters when comparing aid offers because students with similar need may face different sector-specific maximums based on institution and SAI.

In general, students must be Wisconsin residents, file FAFSA, attend an eligible school, and show need under the applicable Student Aid Index formula. Colleges certify enrollment and budget; tribal programs use their own calculation. The result also depends on credits and study duration, so a full-time table amount may be lower for part-time enrollment.

2026–27 formulas list maximums of $3,700 at UW, $1,752 at technical colleges, $4,850 at private nonprofits, and $2,450 at tribal colleges. Some lower-priority tiers are implemented only if funding remains; private awards depend on SAI and the published table. These are program caps, not automatic awards or promises to cover all tuition.

Complete FAFSA when available and list the Wisconsin institution you plan to attend; respond to campus verification and review your aid offer. Ask which sector formula applies, whether a funding-dependent tier is available, how many credits were counted, and how the grant coordinates with other aid. HEAB’s 2026–27 table provides current caps; future figures may change with appropriations.

The listed amounts are sector caps, not promises; some tiers are available only if funding remains. Read the program profile and the administering office; ask your campus financial-aid office to review your individual file.
