Forest Park: choose the entrance as carefully as the destination
Forest Park's municipal guide identifies more than 80 miles of trails and over 40 access points. That scale makes it important to select a named trailhead, a route and a return distance that suit the group. The park is open daily 5 a.m.–10 p.m., but the entrance project near NW St. Helens Road and NW Kittridge Avenue has parking locked at 6 p.m. A late walker should not infer vehicle arrangements from the overall park schedule.
The entrance project's proposed nature center remains a future phase, not a service to expect on arrival. Current trail notices also close Ridge Trail parking on NW Bridge Avenue indefinitely and prohibit use of the Wildwood bridge at mile 15.2, directing walkers to a stepped bypass. These details are more useful to choosing a route than an unqualified promise of easy access. Dogs must be leashed, and cycling is limited to designated routes.
Mt. Tabor: hillside views with a different Wednesday arrangement
The city's main entrance for Mt. Tabor is SE 60th Avenue and SE Salmon Street. Higher ground offers views toward downtown and the West Hills, with Mount Hood visible when conditions allow. The park schedule is 5 a.m.–11:59 p.m., whereas motor vehicles have access 5 a.m.–10 p.m. and are excluded all Wednesday. If someone needs a vehicle close to the destination, that weekly restriction belongs in the plan.
There is also a current construction limit. The picnic shelter damaged in the January 2024 storm is being rebuilt on the city's May–December 2026 schedule. The work area and two adjacent paths are closed; most of the park remains open. Accessible play and picnic facilities do not establish that every hillside connection will suit a wheelchair or stroller. Check the intended approach, particularly while construction diverts paths.
Hoyt Arboretum: let the collection shape the walk
Hoyt's tree collections make it an option for a slower visit organized around plants and labelled routes. The official entrance is 4000 SW Fairview Boulevard. The city publishes grounds hours of 5 a.m.–9:30 p.m., with parking and access roads closing at 9:30 p.m. Paths include paved and unpaved sections; choose terrain as well as distance. Pay parking is identified, and a staffed visitor-center schedule is separate from outdoor access. Contact 503-865-8733 if that service is needed; older printed desk hours are not presented as a current guarantee.
