Which Detroit, Michigan parks and paths should I choose for a riverfront outing?

Detroit's riverfront can be approached through different kinds of outdoor space. Belle Isle offers an island visit with gardens and cultural buildings, Milliken State Park provides a waterfront pause east of downtown, and Dequindre Cut connects the riverfront with Eastern Market through an urban greenway. Choose the place according to the group, the intended walk and the current access arrangements.

Belle Isle: make a plan for the specific attraction

Michigan DNR identifies 99 Pleasure Drive as the park address and 313-821-9844 as its contact. Belle Isle Conservancy publishes grounds hours of 5 a.m.–10 p.m., with free walking and cycling entry and an applicable Recreation Passport required for vehicles. Michigan's pass fees increased January 1, 2026; check the current vehicle category rather than using a price in an old review.

Current works change the visit. The Scott Fountain plaza, adjacent sidewalk and Fountain Drive are closed through 2026, with reopening planned spring 2027; Shelters 2 and 8 are closed for the season. DNR now confirms completed traffic-flow improvements, including two-way Central Avenue between Picnic Way and Portage Way. Follow present signs on arrival.

If the visit is built around an indoor attraction, use its own hours. The aquarium publishes Thursday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m., and remains open during renovation; the conservatory publishes Wednesday–Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m. An early park walk does not guarantee either building is staffed. Choose the arrival and route accordingly, without promising that every island activity fits one visit.

Milliken: a river view with a defined urban starting point

William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor is at 1900 Atwater Street, with information at 313-396-0217. DNR describes harbor, picnic-shelter and berm areas. The renovated berm has an accessible walkway, handrails and two scenic viewers designed for visitors with color blindness. It provides a concrete place to start a riverside walk rather than navigating to the whole waterfront without an entrance plan.

DNR's general state-park day-use schedule is 8 a.m.–10 p.m. Harbor and pavilion reservations have separate conditions. The park page's 2026 electrical-service notice concerns Grayhaven State Harbor, a different place; it is not presented as a Milliken closure.

Dequindre Cut: artwork and a connection to Eastern Market

The Conservancy describes a nearly two-mile below-grade route with separate walking and cycling lanes. Its map identifies entrance ramps including Atwater, Lafayette, Gratiot, Wilkins and Mack. Choose where to enter and how far to continue before beginning. The published hours are daily 6 a.m.–10 p.m.

There are no permanent restrooms. Portable toilets are identified near Campbell Terrace April–October, while Freight Yard food and entertainment are seasonal. A path open for walking is not a promise of a staffed event, food truck or permanent restroom at every entrance.
