Where to try Shizuoka oden: Ogawa by day or Mikawaya at night?

Ogawa keeps a traditional shop near Sengen; Mikawaya serves oden and grilled dishes in Aoba Yokocho.

Shizuoka oden is known for its dark broth and skewers, but the time of day changes the experience. Near Shizuoka Sengen Shrine, Ogawa serves daytime oden in a room that retains the feel of an old-fashioned sweets shop. In Aoba Yokocho, Mikawaya opens later in an alley of small restaurants, where oden shares dinner with fried and charcoal-grilled dishes. These are two ways to fit a local speciality into a city walk. The pot may hold daikon, egg, beef tendon and kuro-hanpen, a fish cake associated with Yaizu; skewers are often finished with powdered fish and seaweed. At Ogawa, diners choose items before visiting the shrine or walking towards Sunpu Park. The city tourism office describes it as a rare daytime dagashiya-style oden shop. Some ingredients sell out, so arrive earlier if you have a particular item in mind. Mikawaya offers a different night-time scene: a small restaurant that began as a street stall in 1948. Its official menu combines oden with lotus-root fritters and charcoal-grilled dishes; prices may change and seasonal items vary. Visitors value the flavour and atmosphere, though some say the room feels tight when full. A service charge may apply, and the venue has an age restriction for children because of its size. Ogawa is about five minutes from Nakamachi bus stop; it opens 10:00 am–6:30 pm, closes Wednesdays and may stop when ingredients sell out. Mikawaya is a ten- to thirteen-minute walk from JR Shizuoka, opens 5:00–10:00 pm and closes Sundays and some Mondays. Ogawa fits a daytime cultural visit; Mikawaya suits an evening meal. Check schedules and conditions before setting out.
