Where can you try Iwakuni-zushi near Kintai Bridge?

Hirasei serves pressed sushi beside Kintai Bridge; Sakura offers it in set meals with a nearby view.

Crossing Kintai-kyo means stepping into one of Iwakuni’s most recognisable scenes: five wooden arches over the Nishiki River, with the castle on the hill. The bridge, Kikko Park and ropeway make a walk that can be linked with lunch without returning to the centre. Two nearby restaurants serve Iwakuni-zushi, the city’s pressed sushi: Hirasei stands beside the bridge, while Sakura has a dining room and views inside a hotel. Iwakuni-zushi is assembled in a broad frame, layering vinegared rice with fish, vegetables and omelette before pressing and cutting it into squares. It is not individual nigiri but a dish for sharing, linked to feasts in the former Iwakuni domain. Each restaurant adapts its ingredients, while the stacked form recalls celebratory cooking. Trying it before crossing the bridge or after walking through the former samurai district adds local food to the historic route. Hirasei appears on the tourism association’s food map and is only steps from the bridge. It preserves a wooden pressing frame. Diners often praise flavour, fish and location; some are less positive about the food or note limited English communication. Opening listings differ, so call ahead to avoid a wasted walk. Sakura offers pressed sushi in a set meal with soup and sides, in a larger room. The bridge view is part of its appeal, though comments on the food are mixed. Lunch is listed 11:00 am–2:30 pm, last order 1:30 pm, with Wednesday closure, subject to change. Buses from JR Iwakuni take about twenty minutes. Choose Hirasei for a quick stop by the landmark, or Sakura for a slower meal with a view.
