The Castello Estense did not begin as a romantic backdrop. After a popular revolt in 1385, Nicolò II d’Este ordered a brick fortress surrounded by a moat; over time, the Este family turned it into a court residence. Ferrara grew around that court and earned UNESCO recognition for its Renaissance urban planning. Leaving the castle, the arcades of Piazza Savonarola and medieval lanes lead towards Ferrarese cooking: Trattoria da Noemi, in a 15th-century palace with a family tradition dating to 1958, and Hostaria Savonarola, beneath the square’s arcades and facing the castle.
The local food story is about more than one pasta. Pumpkin cappellacci have a soft filling and are served with ragù or butter and sage; pasticcio di maccheroni combines pasta, ragù and a pastry crust in a celebratory bake. Salama da sugo with mashed potato is a more robust alternative. At Da Noemi, pasta is made by hand and the menu pairs dishes with wines from Emilia-Romagna; Savonarola offers a more immediate stop beside the landmark, with cured meats, pasticcio, roast dishes and regional sweets.
Da Noemi requires some planning: it serves lunch and dinner on Monday and Thursday to Sunday, and closes Tuesday and Wednesday. Booking ahead is sensible at weekends. The family suggests calling between 11 a.m. and noon or 6 and 7 p.m. Savonarola’s public listings show daily lunch and dinner service, although we recommend confirming the hours by phone. The practical difference is also about atmosphere: Da Noemi lets you settle into a family-run house with a substantial wine list; Savonarola puts you almost opposite the castle towers.
A straightforward route begins at the moat and ducal apartments, continues beneath the arcades of Piazza Savonarola and leads on to the cathedral and Piazza Trento e Trieste. Reserve Da Noemi if handmade pasta is the focus; choose Savonarola for the closest meal to the castle. In either case, check the current menu and leave room for a local dessert. Like its architecture, Ferrara’s food combines courtly heritage with everyday life without turning the visit into a museum.
Choose Da Noemi and book ahead for handmade pasta; for a table facing the Castello Estense, Savonarola is the most direct stop.

Hostaria Savonarola is hard to miss: its tables sit beneath the arcades of Piazza Savonarola, facing one side of the Castello Estense.
