Maskay guide

Where can you try apple pie in Hirosaki after visiting the castle?

Hirosaki brings together apple pies made with Aomori fruit. Two cafés in historic park buildings let visitors compare styles without unnecessary transfers.

Hirosaki Castle sits within a park of moats, cherry trees and old defences; around it, Western-style mansions and gardens recall how this Tsugaru city also became a centre of commerce and culture. Hirosaki is Japan’s leading apple-producing city, and the crop appears in local baking in many forms. The municipal guide gathers around forty pies and compares sweetness, tartness and cinnamon: rather than naming winners, it helps visitors find a style they like.

At Fujita Memorial Garden, Taisho Roman Tea Room brings together several pies from local bakeries, along with apple galettes, curry made with Hirosaki fruit, pasta and drinks. It occupies a Taisho-era Western-style mansion with spacious rooms and a conservatory dining area. Guests can try several recipes at one table overlooking the garden, although popularity creates queues: join the waitlist on arrival, seating is limited to 60 minutes and the queue may close early. Garden admission is separate.

For a stop that stays inside the park, Cafe Kitano Kuruwa occupies the former Butokuden pavilion, now a rest area. Its set of two slices from city bakeries makes a quick comparison possible; simple meals and drinks are also available. Visitors appreciate the building and garden, though some find the menu short. Pie selection depends on the day’s stock: this is a café bringing together local goods, not a bakery making everything on site.

An efficient route runs from the castle to Fujita Garden and then, if appetite remains, to Butokuden; reverse it if your walk starts in the north of the park. From JR Hirosaki Station, take the loop bus or a taxi; walking takes about half an hour. Some park areas have seasonal admission charges and the main castle keep is being relocated, so the view may differ from familiar postcards. Check the route and opening hours before setting out.

A Taisho-era house for tasting several bakeries and a park pavilion for two slices: those are the useful differences between the stops. Consult the updated city guide, confirm which pies are available and choose between a longer garden break or a short rest among the walls and ponds. In Hirosaki, dessert works best when it follows your walk instead of sending you across town for one slice.
