A night in Versailles changes the pace of a palace visit that many people make as a day trip from Paris. Instead of calculating the first train, you can wake near the palace and walk to the Cour d’Honneur. Yet the town has several stations, and a booking “near Versailles” does not always mean near the entrance. For RER line C arrivals, Versailles Château–Rive Gauche is the closest station to the palace, about ten minutes on foot according to the institution itself. Hôtel du Jeu de Paume Versailles favours arrival by rail; Hôtel Le Versailles puts the room closer to the ceremonial gate.
Choose the station and entrance first
The palace is also accessible from Versailles Chantiers and Versailles Rive Droite, but the walks differ. Before paying for a hotel, check which station your train uses and whether you will have luggage. The main entrance is in the Cour d’Honneur, not at any gate in the park. The Trianon estate is much farther away on foot, and garden entry can require a ticket on Musical Fountains or Musical Gardens days. A palace-side room removes the morning commute; it does not replace booking and checking access to the estate.
A three-star base in Saint-Louis
Hôtel du Jeu de Paume occupies 5 bis rue de Fontenay near the Royal Tennis Court and about five minutes from the RER C station according to the hotel. It has three stars, round-the-clock reception, a garden and design-led rooms. The small doubles measure 12–16 square metres, relevant for two people with large bags. Guests praise the quiet and the welcome; check the exact room category and whether breakfast costs extra. It is a base for reaching the palace on foot while still experiencing a residential street.
A four-star base almost at the gate
Hôtel Le Versailles is at 7 rue Sainte-Anne, a very short walk from the entrance. It lists four stars, 47 rooms, a lounge, bar, terrace and 24-hour front desk. Breakfast buffet begins at 06:30 on weekdays and 07:30 at weekends; private parking has a charge and a space should be requested. Its location is valued, although some reviews raise concerns about the condition or size of certain rooms relative to category expectations. Official stars are not the guest score: read both without mixing them.
For an easy RER C arrival and a garden stay in Saint-Louis, Jeu de Paume makes sense. To step out almost directly towards the palace gate and have more hotel facilities, Le Versailles is more practical. Compare total cost for the same night, with equivalent breakfast and cancellation terms, before calling either option inexpensive.
Jeu de Paume suits an RER arrival and quiet Saint-Louis base; Le Versailles shortens the walk to the palace gate and offers four-star facilities and an early weekday breakfast.
