Maskay guide

Where should you stay in Rovinj: in the old town or by Zlatni Rt park?

Hotel Adriatic places you by the historic harbour; Hotel Lone moves the stay to coastal forest, bay and pools. Distance from the centre changes the pace.

Rovinj still feels like an island, even though it no longer is one. The old town stood on an island until 1763, when the channel separating it from the mainland was filled in; centuries of Venetian rule left stepped lanes, colourful houses and the tower of St Euphemia as a landmark above the Adriatic. From that compact peninsula, Zlatni Rt coastal forest begins to the south, beside coves and walking paths. Accommodation changes the everyday view: square and harbour at the door, or park, bay and resort facilities.

Hotel Adriatic by Maistra Collection faces the harbour in the historic centre. Its 14 rooms and four suites, each with individual artwork and different views, create a boutique scale; downstairs are a French-inspired brasserie and a bar with more than 100 whiskies. The regional tourism directory lists it as a four-star hotel. Public comments praise location, breakfast and service, while noting that room size and outlook vary considerably: room category matters.

Hotel Lone by Maistra Collection is beside Zlatni Rt and about 1.5 kilometres from the centre. The five-star hotel has 248 rooms and suites overlooking the sea or forest, indoor and outdoor pools, a spa, restaurants, a gym and nearby beach access. Guests praise the architecture, breakfast and spacious rooms; in high season, some say shared areas become busy and extra charges can add to the bill. This is a full resort stay, not simply a bed near town.

The choice is also about logistics. Adriatic is roughly 500 metres from the bus terminal and 50 metres from the harbour, although the old town has narrow streets and limited vehicle access; the hotel points guests to parking 800 metres away. Lone offers free outdoor parking and a garage, but requires a coastal walk to dine in town. Both bring the sea close, but they shape the day differently.

If the plan is to step outside and explore churches, galleries, harbour and restaurants, Adriatic makes better use of every hour. If you want to alternate swimming, trails, pool time and rest at the hotel, Lone offers more space and facilities, with the centre a 1.5-kilometre walk away. Check arrival arrangements with luggage and the room type before booking: in Rovinj, a few hundred metres and the selected category can reshape the stay.

Bottom line

Adriatic suits walks among squares, harbour and lanes; Lone offers a resort beside the sea and park, 1.5 km from the centre.
