Maskay guide

Where should you stay in Ancona: the old town or Portonovo Bay?

Grand Hotel Palace is close to the harbour and monuments; Hotel Emilia offers parkland, a pool and the sea in the Conero. We compare access, facilities and trip styles.

Ancona looks out over the Adriatic from its hills: the old town climbs to San Ciriaco Cathedral, while the Conero coast opens onto bays of stone and Mediterranean vegetation. That geography makes for a practical booking choice: sleep beside monuments and ferry departures, or turn your stay into a seaside pause beyond the centre. Grand Hotel Palace and Hotel Emilia answer those two ways of experiencing the Marche capital.

Grand Hotel Palace Ancona occupies a historic palazzo at 24 Lungomare Luigi Vanvitelli, facing the old harbour. Officially classified as a four-star hotel, it has 39 rooms and four suites, plus a wine bar, restaurant and gym in a position from which several central sights are walkable. Guests often praise the building, breakfast, service and views; some mention compact bathrooms and port activity in certain rooms. Request a room category if the outlook matters.

Hotel Emilia, also officially rated four stars, is in Portonovo, within a 27,000-square-metre private park. It has 34 rooms, a panoramic pool, olive grove and a restaurant rooted in the Marche. Nearby are a pebble beach, the church of Santa Maria, two brackish lakes and Fortino Napoleonico. Visitors often highlight the views, breakfast and pool; some reviews say restaurant service can be slow.

Distance matters more than category: Ancona Tourism says the centre is linked to Portonovo by a seasonal summer bus and that a shuttle runs between the bay’s upper car park and its small piazza. It also describes an approximately 11-kilometre walking and cycling route between city and coast, with hills. For an early ferry, museums or a walk through the old town, Palace reduces transfers. For days split between swimming, the pool and trails, Emilia makes more sense, once services and connections for your dates are confirmed.

Consider the pace of your itinerary. San Ciriaco and the old town’s lanes are easier from a city base; Portonovo is a different kind of break, with a pebble beach and Mount Conero on the horizon. These hotels are not equally close to the centre: one solves the logistics of harbour and city, the other makes the accommodation part of a nature-focused rest. Check seasonal availability, transport and room type before deciding.

Bottom line

Grand Hotel Palace suits the harbour, station and walkable centre; Hotel Emilia is a nature-and-beach stay that requires transport planning.
