Petrovaradin is not a place to rush through: its walls and bastions spread above the Danube, with courtyards, studios and viewpoints that can keep visitors longer than expected. The present fortress began in 1692 and the complex was completed during the eighteenth century. From above, Novi Sad seems to continue across the river, linked by bridges and an everyday life that reaches down to the waterfront. After visiting, a meal can follow two routes: seek the flavours of the Vojvodina plain in a spacious restaurant or sit by the water with the fortress still in view.
Plava Frajla, inside the SPENS centre at Sutjeska 2, presents a regional menu with sarma, perkelt, stews, sač-cooked dishes and Central European-style sweets. Its offer helps visitors explore Vojvodina without turning dinner into a list of unfamiliar names: sač means slow cooking, while sarma and stews reflect food made to share and restore energy. The local tourism organisation also highlights charcoal grilling, vegetarian choices and a children’s menu. It is a practical option for groups and for anyone wanting to order several dishes in a room with plenty of capacity.
Those who would rather extend the river view can choose Taverna Sat at Kej žrtava racije 2. Its terrace overlooks the promenade and faces Petrovaradin; the menu combines Serbian and Italian cooking, so it is less focused on Vojvodina recipes but more flexible when travellers want different things. Visitors particularly value the panorama and friendly welcome; some say service slows when the room is busy. The restaurant appears in the regional tourism directory, although we could not find a current official business website with dependable hours.
The simplest route is to descend from the fortress towards Varadin Bridge, cross into Novi Sad and follow the Danube promenade to Taverna Sat. From there, SPENS lies south of the centre, an option for travellers who prioritise regional dishes and a wide menu. There is no need to choose according to claims of absolute authenticity: one table is about the view, the other about the home-style cooking of a multicultural region. At either, check opening times and book if travelling at weekends or during festival season.
For a first visit, Plava Frajla helps introduce Vojvodina dishes, while Taverna Sat lets the fortress remain part of the scene. The choice depends on appetite and pace: regional food with greater variety indoors, or a riverside meal after walking the ramparts.
Plava Frajla puts regional cooking first; Taverna Sat offers a table beside the Danube with Petrovaradin in view.
