Colmar's Little Venice is more than a stage set of pretty façades. The tourist office explains that its name follows the Lauch River from behind the Koïfhus through the old fishmongers' district to the Turenne and Saint-Pierre bridges. Boatmen, wine growers and market gardeners once lived here. That history changes the idea of dinner: an Alsatian table at the end of the walk can show that the district is not only a photographic backdrop, but part of a city shaped by markets, wine and seasonal cooking.
If your walk ends near Turenne bridge, Wistub Brenner is almost on the route. According to the restaurant, its wood-panelled room seats around thirty and serves regional dishes made with seasonal produce. The Michelin Guide mentions cervelas-and-Comté salad, onion tart, sauerkraut and pork knuckle with Pinot Noir sauce. These examples help explain the menu, not promise that every dish is served every evening. Its size and popularity make booking sensible, especially when more visitors are in town.
Another option involves walking back towards Grand Rue and the Koïfhus area. Le Fer Rouge occupies a historic building and advertises sauerkraut, baeckeoffe cooked with Alsatian red wine and seasonal dishes. The atmosphere on a busier street differs from that of the small canal-side winstub: there is more movement and, as some diners report, service can vary when the restaurant fills. For a group or travellers ending their route near the shopping streets, the location may be an advantage.
Do not treat “Alsatian food” as a single dish. Choucroute combines fermented cabbage with accompaniments; baeckeoffe is an oven-baked stew; onion tart offers a simpler way into the region's cooking. Check the current menu for dietary needs. At Brenner, the website separates full lunch and evening service from a more limited afternoon menu. At Le Fer Rouge, the English timetable is ambiguously worded, so confirm kitchen hours before planning dinner around it.
Travel season also changes the logistics. Le Fer Rouge warns that it does not accept reservations during the Christmas market; Brenner has a booking channel, but a small dining room can fill quickly. The best decision therefore begins before reaching the bridge: decide whether to eat beside Little Venice itself or walk back through Colmar's commercial heart. The route remains short, but the evening's atmosphere changes.
Wistub Brenner offers an intimate meal beside the canal and merits a booking; Le Fer Rouge takes you back towards Grand Rue for Alsatian food in a livelier setting.
