Maskay guide

Where can you eat after visiting the Arena of Nîmes and still see the amphitheatre?

La Table du 2 offers an elevated view from the Romanity Museum; Le Cheval Blanc serves brasserie food and wine at plaza level.

The Arena of Nîmes does not disappear when you leave the amphitheatre. The Roman building dominates the square, making a meal nearby also a decision about how to look at the city. A high table in the Musée de la Romanité and a vaulted room facing the arena offer two very different continuations of the walk. Both call for checking the day and time: performances can affect access to the monument, and kitchens do not stay open without a break all afternoon.

La Table du 2 occupies the second floor of the Musée de la Romanité, at 2 bis rue de la République, with its own entrance. The museum describes it as a brasserie using regional produce and looking towards the amphitheatre. That arrangement links archaeology and lunch without claiming that a museum ticket is required to enter the restaurant. Windows and a terrace provide an elevated view; when booking, ask about the table if that perspective is your main reason for choosing it. The restaurant lists daily lunch and dinner from March to October, with a different winter schedule.

Across the way, Wine Bar Le Cheval Blanc stands at 1 place des Arènes. The experience is a brasserie and wine bar in vaulted rooms with local art, more enclosed than the museum's contemporary architecture. Its website describes meat, fish, traditional dishes such as andouillette and classic desserts, with wine by the glass. A menu is an offer, not a promise that every dish will be available every day. It lists lunch and dinner Monday to Saturday; Sunday is not a regular service day.

Diner accounts help moderate expectations. La Table du 2 is praised for its view and seasonal dishes, but some visitors report waiting or uneven service. Le Cheval Blanc stands out for wine, atmosphere and attention, while also drawing occasional criticism of a dish or its price. In either case, proximity to a landmark does not automatically make a meal good value: check the current menu, ask about kitchen hours and book on concert, fair or other busy days.

If visiting the amphitheatre before lunch, the easiest sequence is to finish the tour and go to an already booked table. If you emerge after 14:00, Le Cheval Blanc does not resume normal service until evening. La Table du 2 lists lunch until 15:00 in season, though confirming last orders is prudent. For a pause directly linking museum, archaeology and panorama, choose La Table du 2's upper level. For wine and brasserie cooking at plaza level, choose Le Cheval Blanc.

Bottom line

La Table du 2 extends the Roman visit in the museum and opens Sundays in the listed season; Le Cheval Blanc offers wine and brasserie cooking on the square, Monday to Saturday.
