Spoleto has a dramatic edge: the houses end and the gorge separating town from Monteluco’s woods begins. Two works tell that story. Rocca Albornoziana offers history through rooms, courtyards and walls; Ponte delle Torri turns it into a walk above the ravine. Asking which to see does not force a single choice. They stand beside each other, but admission, effort and the time each requires are different.
Start in Piazza Campello and enter the fortress. Its National Museum of the Duchy gathers evidence of Spoleto’s medieval past in a fourteenth-century papal building that later served as a prison. The courtyards, painted chamber and views towards Monteluco reward attention. From 1 October, the national museum listed opening from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., closure on Tuesdays, last admission 45 minutes earlier and a €7.50 standard ticket. Upper walkways and towers are advertised separately: check their times and price before paying if that high viewpoint is your main aim.
Next, follow Via del Ponte beside the wall. The aqueduct bridge runs about 230 metres and stands roughly 80 metres above the gorge. It brought water to town and linked the Rocca with the Fortilizio dei Mulini. The outdoor crossing is free. Old reviews can mislead here: after closure following the 2016 earthquake, the town announced the reopening and, in April 2025, pedestrian access without time limits. A temporary incident remains possible; to know whether you can cross today, give more weight to a current municipal notice than to a comment from years ago.
The physical experience differs too. Spoleto’s mechanical routes ease the climb to the upper town, but access to rooms inside the historic fortress needs checking separately. On the bridge, exposed height, paving and light matter more than a map’s estimated walking time. Crossing towards Monteluco gives you a view back to Spoleto’s outline. If you want a shorter walk, you can stop at the near end and continue around the Rocca.
For a short visit without paying admission, the bridge and exterior viewpoint tell a strong story of the city. With more time, or if you want to understand the images, life and function of the fortress, enter the museum before closing and cross afterwards. Check hours and restrictions on the day: the Rocca and bridge are neighbours, but they have different operators and rules.

Ponte delle Torri makes Spoleto’s geography visible. It leaves the area beside Rocca Albornoziana, spans a deep gorge and reaches the Monteluco side. Umbriatourism puts the stone structure at about 230 metres long and 80 metres high. It was more than a scenic crossing: it carried water into town and
