Taormina is awkward to rush: the old centre sits above, while Isola Bella’s bay lies far below. That change in height can give a day its shape. The Ancient Theatre lets you read the landscape through a building transformed by Greeks and Romans; Isola Bella brings you down to sea level, to an islet with more history than its familiar roadside photograph suggests. Combining them calls for attention to opening times and the descent, not just the distance on a map.
Begin at the theatre in the upper town. The archaeological park traces its origins to the Hellenistic period but says most visible remains belong to Roman rebuilding. From the auditorium, the stage frames the sea and Mount Etna when skies are clear. Do not come only for the view: the structure also shows how its purpose changed. Listed standard admission was €14, with usual opening from 9 a.m. to 7:45 p.m. and last entry at 7 p.m. A performance or its preparations can change the visit, and an event ticket is separate.
Then descend to the bay. The pebble beach, private services and admission to the islet are different things. The regional park listed €6 standard admission to Isola Bella and opening from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. If you want to enter the islet, do not leave it until late afternoon. Its isthmus may be dry or covered depending on the tide. The region announced that the islet reopened on 20 June 2026, although one review platform still marked it closed. Check the park’s notice, not an outdated aggregator label.
Reviews help set expectations. The theatre impresses with its views, but can have crowds or concert structures; Isola Bella stands out for water and rock, but the beach gets busy and private loungers can be expensive. Admission to the islet does not include a lounger or the theatre ticket. The descent from the upper town to the shore is substantial. Check current local transport or allow for both the walk down and the climb back. Bring water, sun protection and shoes suited to ancient stone as well as pebbles.
If time is short, choose the theatre for its combination of history and panorama, then view the bay from above. With a fuller day, visit the theatre early and reach Isola Bella before islet admission closes; leave beach time for afterwards if the weather suits. The route connects two levels of Taormina without treating them as the same experience: one tells centuries of performance, the other the changing relationship between landscape, villa and sea.

Taormina’s Ancient Theatre brings archaeology and landscape into a single frame. The auditorium rests on the hill; beyond the stage lie the Ionian Sea and, when the weather allows, Mount Etna. The regional park dates the original plan to the Hellenistic period but says most of what visitors see belo

Isola Bella, 98039 Taormina ME, Italia
Isola Bella looks like a small stage below Taormina, but its shape changes with the water: a short isthmus emerges or disappears with the tide. The regional archaeological park explains that twentieth-century owners transformed the islet, building a villa among its rock and vegetation. Looking down
