Maskay guide

What can you do in DUMBO between the waterfront park, the bridges and a historic carousel?

Walk the free piers of Brooklyn Bridge Park and add a US$4 ride on the seasonal Jane’s Carousel.

A walk through DUMBO makes most sense at river level. Brooklyn Bridge Park turns former piers into a sequence of gardens, play areas and open spaces facing the Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge and skyline. Entry is free and the park opens daily from 6 a.m. to 1 a.m.; because it covers 85 acres, choose a section instead of rushing from end to end. A short walk around Empire Fulton Ferry already brings together industrial history, wide views and one of the district’s most photographed corners.

Between the piers, Jane’s Carousel offers a different scale: 48 carved horses turn inside a glass pavilion designed to protect the ride while preserving views of the water. Built in 1922 and restored by Jane Walentas, the carousel is both a historic object and a family ride. Visitors often praise the restoration, music and setting; the listing checked showed 4.7/5 from 3,493 opinions. It is not a large amusement park, but a single ride can make a welcome pause for children.

The carousel costs US$4 and, during fall 2026, opens Wednesday to Sunday between 11 a.m. and 5:50 p.m.; it is closed Monday and Tuesday. One child under 42 inches and one adult may share a ticket. From the carousel, continue along the piers and return towards Empire Stores, where restrooms have seasonal hours and food options are available. Nearby subway stations include York Street, High Street and Clark Street; the NYC Ferry also stops at Fulton Ferry Landing. The park recommends public transport because parking beside the water is limited.

For a first visit, allow two or three hours: start with the waterfront view, ride the carousel if it is open and leave time to sit beside the river before taking the bridge photograph. If travelling with a pushchair or needing an accessible route, the park says its paths are accessible, although individual piers and facilities have their own conditions. Check alerts and schedules on the day: maintenance, events or seasonal changes may close specific areas without affecting the rest of the walk.
