Maskay guide

What should you do in Pioneer Square: visit the Klondike museum, walk underground or see Seattle from Smith Tower?

Compare a free gold-rush museum, a guided walk beneath the streets and the historic Smith Tower observatory.

In Pioneer Square, Seattle comes into focus through several layers: the city that outfitted Klondike gold seekers, the streets raised after the 1889 fire and a century-old tower from which to read the skyline. The Klondike museum is free and brief; Bill Speidel’s Underground Tour turns the rebuilding story into a guided walk below street level; Smith Tower changes the scale with an open-air observatory. All three are in the district, but they require different amounts of time and money.

Start at the National Park Service visitor centre in the former Cadillac Hotel. Its exhibits explain why gold seekers passed through Seattle and what they carried north; free films and objects provide context without taking up a whole morning. It opens Wednesday to Sunday, 10 a.m.–5 p.m., and admission is free. This is the simplest option for families or visitors seeking a solid introduction before walking around the neighbourhood, although its compact size is not a substitute for a full-scale history museum.

The underground tour lasts about 75 minutes and departs from Pioneer Place Park. With a guide, you descend to former pavements and shopfronts left below today’s street level when Seattle raised its roads; the storytelling mixes history with humour. Visitors often praise entertaining guides, but you need to manage stairs and narrow passages. To end the day above ground, Smith Tower carries you to the 35th floor of a building opened in 1914. The observatory and bar combine views, period details and exhibits; tickets are timed, and private events may change access.

The museum is at 319 2nd Avenue S, the tour departs from 614 1st Avenue, and Smith Tower is at 506 2nd Avenue, all in Seattle, WA 98104. The NPS museum closes Monday and Tuesday; from October to March, tours leave hourly from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Smith Tower opens at noon and closes at different times depending on the day. With a morning to spare, pair the museum with the underground walk; save the observatory for a clear afternoon. All three stops are walkable, although stairs and cobblestones call for sturdy footwear.
