WV STEM supports residents pursuing an approved science, technology, engineering, or mathematics major at a participating West Virginia institution. The program lists a maximum of up to $3,000 per academic year, but that is not a guaranteed check: eligibility, funding, and other aid applied to the account matter. Students should compare the 2026–27 major list with the occupation they intend to enter because an approved major does not mean every later job fulfills the service requirement.
In addition to citizenship or eligible immigration status and academic qualifications, recipients sign an agreement to work full-time in an approved STEM field in West Virginia for one year for every funded year. The state excludes health-care jobs from the employment that satisfies service, even though some health-related majors may appear on academic lists: these are separate tests. Failure to meet the commitment can convert the award into debt with interest and fees.
The 2026–27 application closed on March 1, 2026; as of this review, a student who did not apply should not budget for a new award in that cycle. The state says the scholarship requires a new application each year and uses cycle-specific major and occupation lists. Current recipients should keep their award letter, confirm renewal rules, and document each job; new applicants should watch for the next official opening.
