The Mississippi Tuition Assistance Grant (MTAG) is state aid for residents pursuing a first certificate, associate degree, or bachelor’s at an approved Mississippi institution. It ties need to eligibility for less than the maximum federal Pell Grant, alongside academic requirements. It does not automatically cover every school, program, or living expense; confirm tuition, credit, and progress rules with the college.
For students already in college, Mississippi requires one year of legal state residency before applying, full-time enrollment, and at least 12 credits each semester. Applicants also need a 2.5 cumulative college GPA after at least 12 completed hours and Pell eligibility below the maximum, determined from the latest FAFSA transaction. Recent high-school graduates may qualify through a different GPA or ACT pathway.
The annual cap is $500 for freshmen and sophomores and $1,000 for juniors and seniors. MTAG may be received for up to eight semesters or until degree completion, whichever comes first. These are maximums; the final package depends on enrollment, concurrent aid, and remaining terms. The agency says students cannot receive more than one state undergraduate grant in the same term.
Students apply each year through the Mississippi Aid Application (MAAPP), and some applicants must submit residency documents. The official page lists October 15 for fall and March 15 for spring as institutional enrollment or GPA verification dates in reinstatement cases; they should not be confused with the general application calendar. Check the MAAPP portal for the cycle deadline and keep the confirmation.
MTAG is not interchangeable with HELP, which uses different financial-need rules, or the Mississippi Eminent Scholars Grant (MESG), which emphasizes academic merit. The state portal compares these programs and notes that other grants may pay more; a student eligible for multiple grants may receive the larger one rather than stacking all of them in one term. Ask the college which program was applied and why.
To prepare, complete FAFSA and MAAPP, confirm residency, credits, transcript, and approved-college status. If your high-school GPA did not meet the threshold but you have completed a year of college, the official FAQ describes a route based on cumulative college GPA; ask the administrator to review your record. Do not pay to submit a free state application or send sensitive documents outside the official portal.
Before applying, confirm the current cycle, priority date, participating institution, enrollment load, and any missing records. Keep a copy of the FAFSA or state form, transcripts, and submission confirmation. Ask about renewal, covered expenses, and coordination with other aid. Do not budget money until you receive an official award.
Compare net cost and distinguish scholarships, grants, waivers, and loans; they are not all repaid or applied to the same charges. Verify current-cycle dates and requirements directly with the administrator.
Read the program profile and federal FAFSA guide; confirm with the administrator how the aid coordinates.
