How to apply for Washington college aid: WA Grant or College Bound?

WA Grant and College Bound guide: differences, FAFSA or WASFA, 2026–27 income, middle-school enrollment and the 2027–28 WASFA change.

Washington has two programs students often confuse. WA Grant is an income- and cost-based grant for college, career training and certain eligible programs. College Bound is a promise that becomes usable later for students enrolled during middle-school years who meet the rules when they enter postsecondary education. They are not interchangeable, though WSAC coordinates them and College Bound may be combined with WA Grant when tuition coverage is calculated.

To seek WA Grant, FAFSA is for students who can apply for federal aid; WASFA lets people who do not file FAFSA or are not eligible for it apply for state aid. Do not complete both redundantly unless your college tells you to. Send the application to the right school; the institution determines eligibility and amount. For 2026–27, a family of four earning up to $83,500 falls in the full WA Grant range, with partial awards potentially available above it depending on the chart and school type.

For College Bound, first check whether the student was enrolled by a school in an eligible grade. In senior year, the student must file FAFSA or WASFA, attend a participating institution and meet income, residency and progress conditions. If you do not remember enrolling, ask your counselor and confirm the record with WSAC; a verbal promise or form someone once completed does not prove active status. There are also specific pathways for private-school, homeschool and newly eligible students.

The aid year matters. WSAC offers 2026–27 WASFA for students attending from fall 2026 through spring 2027 and 2027–28 for those starting the following year. The new 2027–28 application uses a redesigned platform that opened October 1, 2026; returning users who cannot sign in should contact support rather than create multiple accounts. For summer, ask the college which FAFSA/WASFA covers the term before filing the wrong year.

A WGU Washington student reported in September 2026 that WA Grant took time to appear and then showed pending; WSAC separately clarifies that College Bound requires a financial-aid application and a participating school. Those accounts help frame portal questions but do not set a payment date. If an award is missing, ask whether College Bound enrollment is recorded, whether the application arrived, whether verification remains, whether income qualifies and how WA Grant coordinates with other aid. Compare net cost and uncovered expenses before committing.

Keep the income tests separate. For 2026–27 WA Grant, a household of four may qualify for a full award at income up to $83,500, with partial awards available up to $139,500; the calculation uses income reported on 2024 taxes. College Bound lists a different 2026–27 limit of $90,500 for a household of four and also checks the student’s enrollment record and other requirements. Do not confuse the school-age enrollment test with the income limit for the college year.

Bottom line

Compare the options and confirm eligibility and deadlines directly with the program before applying.
