The Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG) is Texas aid for students with financial need attending a participating private or independent institution. It is not a separate state check students apply for on their own: the participating college determines eligibility, packaging, and disbursement under Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board rules.
Apply through the institution’s financial-aid office and submit the federal or state forms it requires. For 2026–27, Texas published final institutional allocations and FY2027 program guidelines. The college must participate and the file must establish need; submitting FAFSA does not guarantee a slot or award.
The FY2027 published annual maximum is $4,270; an undergraduate with exceptional need may receive up to 150%, or $6,405. The actual award cannot exceed the student’s need or the tuition differential defined by the rules. It is unavailable to someone who already earned a degree and is pursuing a second. TEG cannot be combined with a TEXAS Grant in the same term.
Ask the college whether it participates in TEG, which application it requires, and how it determines exceptional need. File FAFSA or TASFA as applicable and complete verification requests; get written confirmation of the annual award, how it is divided across fall/spring/summer, and the campus file deadline. The state page is a guide, but the school decides the individual file and schedule.
The cap is not a promise of free tuition: the outcome depends on need, tuition differential, and funds allocated to the institution. Read the program profile and the administering office; ask your campus financial-aid office to review your individual file.
