The Texas Tuition Equalization Grant (TEG) helps residents who choose a participating private or independent college in Texas. It is designed to reduce part of the tuition gap between that school and a comparable public university. The college administers the award; it is not a uniform state check, and the institution must participate.
For 2026–27, the state agency lists a $4,270 annual maximum. An undergraduate with “exceptional TEG need” may be considered for up to $6,405, without exceeding financial need or the tuition differential defined in the rules. These are caps; appropriations, student resources, and the school’s calculation may result in a smaller award.
State requirements include Texas residency, financial need, enrollment at least three-quarter time, satisfactory academic progress, and an eligible degree plan leading to a first associate, bachelor’s, master’s, professional, or doctoral degree. Students cannot receive a sports scholarship requiring competition while receiving TEG, or combine TEG and TEXAS Grant for the same term.
Apply through the college’s financial-aid office. Ask whether it participates, which FAFSA or other documents it requires, its priority date, and how it calculates the tuition difference. The state publishes institutional guidelines, while the school determines the individual award. Before accepting, request a net-cost breakdown separating tuition, fees, housing, and indirect expenses.
Before accepting, request an individual estimate showing aid applied first, residual tuition, mandatory fees, and indirect costs. Confirm residency, credits, renewal, deadlines, and documents with the official program office; keep a copy and submission confirmation. If your situation is unclear, get a written answer from the campus before committing to tuition or housing.
Read the program profile and official FAFSA guide; ask the college for an individual balance review.
