TEXAS Grant: eligibility pathways and 2026–27 maximum award

The state grant requires financial need and enrollment at participating public universities; each campus prioritizes applicants and sets individual awards.

The Toward EXcellence, Access, and Success Grant—TEXAS Grant—is state aid for students with financial need at participating Texas public universities and health-related institutions. Funding is limited, so meeting the rules does not mean every eligible student will receive an award.

General eligibility requires Texas residency as classified by the college, institutional determination of financial need, enrollment at least three-quarter time, and no prior bachelor’s degree, along with other legal requirements. Initial awards may follow a high-school graduation, recent associate degree, military-service, or TEOG-transfer pathway. Each pathway has its own entry window and attempted-credit limits.

For fiscal year 2027, covering 2026–27, THECB published a $5,399 semester maximum and a $2,500 target amount for public universities and health-related institutions. These are state allocation references; an individual award depends on need, institutional funds, and priority. The $6,478 SAI is a prioritization tool for initial awards, not a universal eligibility cutoff.

File FAFSA or TASFA and complete your university’s financial-aid steps; institutions determine eligibility and communicate amounts and internal dates. For an initial award, identify the pathway that matches your record and do not assume that one route’s deadline applies to all. If funds do not appear at the start of term, ask the campus directly.

The agency or institution determines final eligibility and the award under current-cycle rules and available funding. Read the program profile and the administering agency; ask the college for an individual review.
