Teacher Loan Forgiveness: five-year service rules and up to $17,500

Eligible teachers may seek partial forgiveness on certain loans after five consecutive years at low-income schools; it is different from PSLF.

Teacher Loan Forgiveness may reduce a balance for teachers who meet service, subject-area, credential, and school requirements. The published maximum can reach $17,500 for certain highly qualified teachers; other applicants may have a lower cap. It does not make every loan or school eligible.

The general rule requires five complete, consecutive academic years of full-time teaching at an elementary or secondary school or educational service agency listed in the federal low-income directory. A bachelor’s degree, certification, and good standing are required; subject area and teaching responsibility affect the $17,500 tier. Verify the school, dates, and loans before counting service.

Forgiveness is up to $5,000 or $17,500 depending on the program’s highly qualified teacher and subject requirements; the approved amount cannot exceed the eligible balance. It is not a cash payment to the teacher. If you have multiple loans or plan to pursue PSLF, compare sequencing and exclusions so the same service period is not counted twice.

Confirm that the school appears in the TCLI directory for each service year, complete the federal TLF application, and ask the school chief administrative officer to certify the five years. Submit it to the servicer for the eligible loans. Keep contracts, licenses, and employment records; the servicer—not the principal—makes the final determination.

The five-year period may not count toward other forgiveness routes at the same time; compare rules before filing. Read the program profile and the administering agency; ask your financial-aid office to review your individual case.
