Maskay guide

Where can you eat well-priced sushi in Shibuya: Uobei or Sushi no Midori?

Shibuya blends crowded crossings and shopping streets; this guide compares quick sushi in Dogenzaka with set menus in Mark City.

Shibuya often reaches visitors first as an image: the pedestrian crossing, giant screens and station. But choosing somewhere to eat means looking beyond the postcard and orienting yourself by streets. Dogenzaka climbs through restaurants, karaoke venues and late-night businesses; Shibuya Mark City, by contrast, combines shops, offices and transport connections beside the station. In a district Tokyo’s tourism guide presents as a centre of fashion, arts and youth culture, crowds are not limited to one hour or one kind of visitor. The foot traffic calls for attention and queues are possible, but it would be irresponsible to label the entire area with a sweeping safety claim. For sushi with a controllable bill, we compare Uobei Shibuya Dogenzaka and Sushi no Midori in Mark City.

Uobei offers the faster format: choose on a screen and orders arrive on an automated track, without a conventional revolving belt. The branch is at 2-29-11 Dogenzaka and Maps lists daily hours of 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. The company classifies it as an urban-centre branch, so prices from other cities should not automatically be applied. Reviews for this address highlight pace, variety and fair prices; they also mention compact seating and queues at peak times. It works for a meal that does not take over the day, with noodles and fried sides alongside sushi.

Midori changes the pace. It is on the fourth floor of Mark City’s East Mall, and its website lists set menus, seasonal nigiri and takeaway. As a reference, the official menu checked showed upper nigiri for ¥1,980, special nigiri for ¥2,860 and super-special nigiri for ¥3,630, tax included; some products have branch-specific prices. The location has 62 seats and begins issuing in-person queue tickets at 10 a.m. Reviews often praise the amount and perceived quality of the fish and the service, but waiting is the main time cost. A mobile queue number can be obtained, leaving time to browse the complex.

The two locations are close on a map, although elevated walkways and building corridors make it important to follow the correct entrance: Uobei is at street level on Dogenzaka, while Midori is inside Mark City. Midori confirms one hour of discounted parking in its garage after spending ¥3,000 at the restaurant and presenting the ticket; we found no dedicated parking confirmed for Uobei. The choice is practical: Uobei lets diners control spending plate by plate and leave quickly; Midori offers a seated meal and fuller sets, with a wait to build into the plan. Checking the menu and hours on the day helps avoid surprises.
