Spokane Scholars Foundation recognizes outstanding students at participating Spokane-area high schools in six categories: English, fine arts, mathematics, science, social studies, and world languages. It is not an open contest where any student applies independently. Each participating school conducts its selection and submits nominees, so the first step is asking a counselor whether your school takes part and what its internal calendar is.

Each discipline has five award tiers: $1,000, $2,000, $3,000, $4,000, and $5,000. The foundation publishes nominees and award recipients; its 2026 list includes winners in all six fields. These are competitive awards, not automatic scholarships for every nominee. Academic records, test scores, and recommendations are part of the relevant panel’s review.

After a school nominates a student, the selected candidate completes a Spokane Scholar application with additional materials. Schools may select up to six nominees, one in each subject, but the school and foundation determine the process. A school nomination is not the same as final selection for an award; ask the counselor which documents remain and when they are due.

Twelve partner colleges and universities may match an award dollar for dollar for up to one year, but the match depends on the institution and should not be assumed until eligibility is confirmed. Check the partner list and the campus scholarship policy. Ask how the money applies to tuition or other charges and whether it affects need-based aid; keep both the award notice and the college’s response.

Before applying, confirm the current cycle, priority date, participating institution, enrollment load, and any missing records. Keep a copy of the FAFSA or state form, transcripts, and submission confirmation. Ask about renewal, covered expenses, and coordination with other aid. Do not budget money until you receive an official award.

Compare net cost and distinguish scholarships, grants, waivers, and loans; they are not all repaid or applied to the same charges. Verify current-cycle dates and requirements directly with the administrator.

Read the program profile and federal FAFSA guide; confirm with the administrator how the aid coordinates.
