South Carolina HOPE or LIFE scholarship: eligibility and how to keep it

HOPE is limited to the first year; LIFE may renew if residency, GPA and credits are met. Compare requirements, campus deadlines and appeals.

South Carolina offers several state merit awards, and families often treat HOPE and LIFE as levels of one application. The SC HOPE Scholarship is for resident freshmen at eligible four-year institutions who do not qualify for LIFE or Palmetto Fellows; CHE limits it to the first year. The LIFE Scholarship may continue beyond one year, but renewal depends on academic progress and each participating college administers the award.

HOPE’s entry screen is more than a GPA. State regulations require a final GPA of at least 3.0 under South Carolina’s Uniform Grading Policy, state residency at graduation and enrollment, an accepted high-school credential, full-time study and an eligible campus. Citizenship or immigration status, conduct, GED, home-school and early-graduation rules also apply. First-year LIFE applicants generally need two of three measures: a 3.0 GPA, combined SAT 1100 or ACT 22, or a class rank in the top 30 percent. Confirm transcript and conversion rules with the college, especially if you attended high school out of state.

The difference that matters most to a four-year budget is duration. CHE lists HOPE for the freshman year; LIFE may be used for up to eight terms toward a first four-year degree if the student remains eligible, with specific limits for associate, one-year and approved five-year programs. Do not assume every institution awards the same amount. CHE’s page does not list a 2026–27 HOPE amount, and older LIFE tables can change; the campus aid letter is the source for the award actually applied.

To keep LIFE, attention shifts to the LIFE GPA and cumulative credits. Official rules list a 3.0 and usually 30 credits by the end of year one, 60 at the end of year two and 90 at the end of year three; credits from other institutions and dual enrollment may enter the calculation. The measurement year includes summer. Before dropping a course, accepting transfer credits or changing programs, ask the aid adviser to calculate your LIFE GPA and minimum credits. Do not assume it matches the GPA in your campus portal.

When illness, bereavement or another extraordinary event intervenes, CHE has a limited appeal process with deadlines. In July 2026, a student described losing LIFE after falling short on credits, enrolling in summer and then facing a family emergency; she asked what documents to include. That account cannot predict a decision. CHE says the file must be complete, filed within the allowed period and include transcripts from every college attended, including dual enrollment. A public discussion is a reminder to organize records, not an alternative to official rules.

Also ask how the award interacts with Pell, need-based grants and other scholarships: combined aid cannot exceed the federal cost of attendance, and each college explains its application order. Build a worksheet for tuition, fees, housing, meals, books and transport; subtract only confirmed aid and mark renewable awards separately. CHE lists participating institutions, regulations and contacts at 1122 Lady Street, Suite 400, Columbia; LIFE/HOPE coordinator: 803-856-0609; appeals: 803-856-0672 or appeals@che.sc.gov. Bottom line

Compare the options and confirm eligibility and deadlines directly with the program before applying.
