Segal AmeriCorps Education Award in 2027: value and ways to use it

The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award is earned after successfully completing an approved service term; it is not awarded merely for enrolling and is not a college scholarship unrelated to service. It can be used for eligible education or certain federal student-loan payments through a My AmeriCorps account.

The amount depends on the sponsoring program, term classification, and hours completed. For positions approved in FY2027, a 1,700-hour full-time term carries $7,395; shorter terms receive prorated amounts. Applicants under 17, noncitizens who do not qualify, and members with prior service must check limits and exceptions; some terms do not earn a full award.

The FY2027 award may pay eligible expenses at authorized institutions or qualifying federal education loans. Funds remain in the member’s account, expire seven years after being earned, and are treated as federal taxable income in the year used. It is not unrestricted cash.

Before accepting a service position, ask the sponsor how many hours it requires, what duties you will perform, and whether that term offers the Segal Award. After service, confirm that the sponsor certified your hours and that the award appears in My AmeriCorps. To use it, identify an eligible school or loan and review the bill or loan statement and tax treatment.
