Maskay guide

Which Sasebo burger should you try: BigMan in Kamikyomachi or Hikari by the station?

Sasebo’s burger culture grew from postwar port connections into a local food tradition. Compare BigMan’s bacon-and-egg style in Kamikyomachi with Hikari’s thicker Gobangai patty near the station.

Sasebo’s tourism association places the arrival of hamburgers around 1950, when the US naval presence introduced the dish to local cooks. Over time, the shops made it their own with distinctive ingredients, sauces and ways of serving. A burger walk works best as a comparison of two specific businesses, not a search for one single “authentic” recipe.

BigMan in Kamikyomachi opened in 1970 and claims the bacon-and-egg burger as its signature. House-made bacon and a Japanese Black beef patty make for a substantial version, although the 15-seat dining room fills quickly. Hikari’s brand dates to 1951; its Gobangai branch sits beside JR Sasebo Station and the harbour. This branch uses a thicker patty than the original shop and keeps the house sauce, making it convenient if your itinerary continues by train or boat.

Public ratings for both branches are positive overall, but the comments add useful detail. BigMan visitors mention smoky bacon and egg, while the small dining room and waiting time are drawbacks. At Hikari, visitors praise juicy burgers, fries and friendly staff, but also describe limited seating and delays when groups arrive. Choose according to your plans rather than reputation alone: BigMan foregrounds bacon; Hikari is especially convenient for the station.

BigMan is at 7-10 Kamikyomachi, near the central arcades. The local tourism listing gives hours of 10 am–8 pm, last order 7:30 pm, and irregular closing days. Hikari is at 3-1 Shinminatomachi inside Sasebo Gobangai; the mall lists 10 am–9 pm, while the tourism association gives an 8:50 pm last order. Both offer English menus. BigMan has no dedicated parking; Hikari uses the mall’s parking facilities.

For a first visit with time to spare, choose BigMan for its house-smoked bacon and egg at a long-running shop; choose Hikari if station and harbour access and a thicker patty matter more. If you have a free afternoon, try one and save the other for another meal rather than eating both back to back: these are full-size burgers, not small samples. Check the day’s hours and allow for queues before planning a train departure.
