Maskay guide

Where can you see San Gimignano from above: Torre Grossa or Montestaffoli’s Rocca?

Two views of the medieval towers: a ticketed museum and Torre Grossa climb versus an outdoor walk to the Rocca.

San Gimignano announces itself from a distance through its towers, yet inside the walls it is harder to see them as a group. The useful question is not how many you can climb but which perspective you want. Palazzo Comunale and Torre Grossa offer height, frescoes and a view of the old town from its tallest monument. Montestaffoli’s Rocca park lets you look back at the towers from open ground among fortress remains. Both fit a walk, but the effort and cost are different.

UNESCO explains that powerful families raised about 72 tower houses as signs of wealth and rivalry; fourteen survive. The town was also a stop on the Via Francigena. This helps explain why the best view is not always the highest. From Piazza della Cisterna and Piazza del Duomo you can read the streets and façades; from Torre Grossa you see their relationship with the hills; from the Rocca the towers meet the horizon again. Start in the squares so you recognise the skyline before choosing a viewpoint.

The ticketed visit begins at Piazza del Duomo 2. The official museum includes Palazzo Comunale, its art gallery and the Torre Grossa climb. The Sala di Dante holds a Maestà by Lippo Memmi; beyond it, 218 steps lead up a 54-metre tower. On 1 October 2026 the standard ticket was €10, with April–October opening until 7:30 p.m. and last entry at 7 p.m. Reviews value the panorama but warn about the final stair section. Do not buy a combined pass automatically: it pays off only if you will visit the other included places.

The Rocca changes the pace. Visit Tuscany places it a short walk from the centre and describes the remains of a medieval fortress. Visitor comments describe free entry to the park, benches and views of towers and countryside, though a public event may affect access. The route climbs and the historic ground can be uneven; it is not an equivalent step-free alternative. Nor does it replace the frescoes or the vertical perspective of Torre Grossa. It does offer a break without a ticket counter and a view of the town’s outline from outside it.

With limited time or money, walk through both squares and finish at the Rocca. If civic art interests you and you can manage the climb, a Palazzo Comunale ticket adds a different experience to the panorama. With a full morning, do both in that order: first the tower to get your bearings from above, then the Rocca to see how that architecture commands the landscape.
