Rice publishes a need-based aid structure for undergraduate students. For students entering in fall 2027 or later, the page lists tuition coverage for households earning up to $200,000 and tuition, fees, and living expenses such as room and board for incomes up to $100,000, assuming typical assets. The new structure does not apply to fall 2026 entrants or current students; transfers may qualify starting in 2027.
Rice’s commitment may combine federal, state, and institutional grants, with a stated goal of meeting 100% of demonstrated need through loan-free institutional aid. The income table does not replace financial review: assets unusually high relative to income may affect a tier, and the university may still offer need-based aid outside those ranges. It does not automatically pay personal costs above the calculated cost of attendance.
There is no separate application for The Rice Investment. Apply for admission, complete Rice’s standard financial-aid requirements, and submit the annual forms requested; students seeking need-based aid should review FAFSA and CSS Profile requirements for their status. Rice reassesses aid each year. International students are not eligible for The Rice Investment, although they may request other need-based aid under Rice’s instructions.
Cohort year matters: fall 2026 entrants should not assume they receive the expanded 2027 tiers. Also review Rice’s definition of typical assets, whether living with family changes the housing estimate, and the annual cost estimate. “Full tuition” is not the same as zero net cost. Request a personalized award letter and compare direct charges, books, health insurance, transportation, and indirect expenses before accepting.
Use Rice’s cost calculator, then compare it with the official cost for your entering year; income tiers do not replace asset review or the final offer. Prepare FAFSA, CSS Profile, and income/asset records; annual aid files may require parent information based on dependency. Request a separate estimate if living with family and verify which living costs are included. For 2027, request current instructions rather than reusing the 2026 cohort’s calendar.
Read the aid-program profile and official FAFSA guide; ask the college for an individual balance review.
