The 2027 application closes November 5, 2026 at 8 p.m. Eastern. It requires a research report, educator recommendation, project recommendation, school report/transcript, short essays, and disclosure of project support. Test scores are optional. Projects involving people, vertebrate animals, or biological samples may require advance approval and forms; do not wait until the deadline to discover that.
Everything is submitted online, and both student and recommenders must finish before the deadline. The Society recommends resolving technical problems by November 4 at 8 p.m. ET, its guaranteed support deadline. Read the 2027 official rules, upload research in the required format, and make sure counselors and mentors have accepted recommendation requests.
Selection is highly competitive, and research must meet the year’s scientific and ethics rules. The Society excludes team projects, even when students divided tasks, and warns against paying a program that promises competition results. Awards vary by level; do not confuse the top finalist prize with guaranteed aid for every entrant.
Coordinate the three pieces that depend on others: educator recommendation, project-mentor recommendation, and school report. Check whether your research needed institutional approval before it began and disclose financial support, equipment, or mentoring. Submit ahead of time because the system closes at 8 p.m. ET and mailed copies are not accepted. This competition recognizes research; do not rely on it to pay tuition if you lack an eligible completed project.
