Post-9/11 GI Bill 2026–27: tuition, housing, and benefit tiers

Chapter 33 benefits depend on qualifying service; 2026–27 rates differ for public and private schools, in-person study, and housing.

The Post-9/11 GI Bill (Chapter 33) can help Veterans and some eligible dependents with tuition, housing, and other costs. The benefit percentage, or tier, depends on the length and type of service; 100% eligibility should not be assumed. Tuition may be paid to the school, while housing and book payments, when available, are calculated separately.

Full benefits generally require 36 aggregate months of active duty, a qualifying Purple Heart, or separation for a service-connected disability after at least 30 continuous days; shorter service may qualify for graduated tiers. Family transfers, service dates, and entitlement exhaustion have case-specific rules. Confirm that the program and school are VA-approved before enrolling.

For the rate year August 1, 2026–July 31, 2027, VA pays net tuition and mandatory fees at public schools; private and foreign schools are subject to a $30,908.34 annual cap at the 100% tier. Eligible students may also receive up to $1,000 yearly for books and a housing allowance based on E-5-with-dependents BAH, subject to enrollment and modality exceptions.

Apply through VA.gov using the appropriate form and ask the school’s certifying official to certify enrollment. Compare your Certificate of Eligibility with net costs and ask about Yellow Ribbon if tuition exceeds the cap. Check your rate of pursuit: half-time or less generally excludes monthly housing payments.

A Certificate of Eligibility does not mean 100% of total cost is covered. Check the school, personal tier, housing, and uncovered fees before committing. Read the program profile and the administering agency; ask your financial-aid office to review your individual case.
