Passaic taco guide: Puebla masa on Monroe Street and pastor on Market Street

Las Maravillas de Tulcingo, San Antonio and Mexico Restaurant offer regional corn dishes, a multi-location family kitchen and a cut-focused taco table.

A short route through Passaic can turn a taco lunch into a lesson in the different shapes of corn. On Monroe Street, tlacoyos, comal quesadillas and huaraches share the menu with tacos. On Market Street, pastor, carnitas and less familiar cuts make a small mixed order the central attraction.

Las Maravillas de Tulcingo, San Antonio and Mexico Restaurant offer three clear choices. One has a family history reaching back to a Bronx taco stand; another maintains two city restaurants and a separate Clifton branch; the third draws diners to a colorful Market Street room. The profiles gather the details that make those distinctions useful.

Las Maravillas: the Puebla connection is in the masa

At 296 Monroe Street, Jesus and Lucina Pita’s family story reaches back to the first Passaic restaurant in 1995. This larger address followed in 2002, retaining the name of Tulcingo de Valle in Puebla.

Pastor, cecina, suadero and goat tacos make a straightforward meal. Chicharrón in green salsa offers a guisado alternative. The broader reason to stay is the corn menu: quesadillas with squash blossom or huitlacoche, bean or chicharrón tlacoyos, sopes and huaraches. Weekend goat barbacoa, green pipián and chicken mole move beyond antojitos.

San Antonio: choose the preparation and the address

The Monroe restaurant at 206 lists suadero and ranchero steak among its taco favorites. Lengua and golden cheese tacos provide different cuts and textures. A cecina huarache or huitlacoche quesadilla extends the meal without ordering another taco plate.

San Antonio also operates at 101 Broadway in Passaic and in Village Square in Clifton. They share a brand but maintain separate ordering routes and hours, all collected in the profile. Monroe stays open until 11 p.m. daily, while Broadway has an earlier weekday close. Enchiladas suizas, mole and a mixed grill suit a fuller family table.

Mexico Restaurant: a mixed taco order on Market Street

At 141 Market Street, pastor and green salsa are a recurring favorite, alongside carnitas, lengua, tripa and ear tacos. Grilled cactus and onions offer an accompaniment; horchata or another agua fresca completes a simple lunch.

Chicken milanesa tortas, steak tostadas and green enchiladas give a mixed group more choice. The dining room can be busy on weekends, and recent accounts differ on seating waits. Takeout is a practical alternative for someone passing through; a table allows a slower comparison of several taco fillings.

Bottom line

Passaic rewards looking beyond a meat list: the tortilla’s shape, a regional sauce and the right branch all change the meal.
