Rain does not have to push you out of central Otaru. In Ironai, about a ten-minute walk from the station, warehouses and former financial buildings now welcome visitors as museums. Two indoor stops read the city from different angles: the Stained Glass Museum displays English panels rescued from old churches, while the former Bank of Japan explains how money moved through a port city that became important to Hokkaido. The walk between them still tells a coherent story, from commerce to its images and accounts.
The glass museum is the more visual and contemplative visit. Its collection spans the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and is displayed under soft lighting in former commercial buildings. The bank museum is more narrative: documents, currency, architecture and rooms from the 1912 branch turn financial history into a walk-through. Practicalities matter as much as taste: the first charges ¥1,200, while the second is free. If the rain eases, the canal and exterior warehouses complete the day; if it worsens, you can extend the indoor visit without relying on the weather.
Wednesday schedules need attention. The former bank opens 9:30 am–5 pm from April to November and 10 am–5 pm in winter, with last entry at 4:30 pm; it closes Wednesdays unless the day is a public holiday. The Stained Glass Museum follows a different pattern: 9:30 am–5 pm May to October and 10 am–5 pm November to April; it closes on the fourth Wednesday in the warmer season and every Wednesday in winter. Official pages also list special event and installation closures, so do not assume both will be open on the same day.
Public comments help set expectations: the glass collection is praised for colour, preservation and lighting, though some visitors find the visit short or expected more Japanese art; the bank is valued for free entry and its architecture, but can also be explored in about an hour. For a first rainy day, choose the museum that interests you most and add the second only if the calendar and your time allow. Wear suitable shoes: Otaru streets can be slippery in colder months.
