Hollywood, Florida: where older adults can find food and care support

The city directs residents to providers, while CEC and Meals on Wheels offer different food-support paths for older Hollywood residents.

In Hollywood, Florida, help for an older adult can mean different things: a food-shopping program for a low-income resident, meals delivered to someone who cannot leave home, or guidance on which county agency administers a service. The city does not provide one application for every need; its Social Services page says it connects residents with public and community providers.

For a starting point, the City of Hollywood Community Development Division lists (954) 921-3271. Staff can direct residents toward food, transportation, Medicare, housing, and older-adult services. The city warns that many links lead to Broward County. Before submitting documents, confirm which agency accepts the application and whether the benefit requires Hollywood residency or any Broward address.

For food pickup, check the Senior Shopping Food Program at Community Enhancement Collaboration. CEC lists distribution Tuesdays from noon to 1 p.m. for low-income Hollywood residents age 62 and older; participants need identification and proof of address. It is not home delivery, and supplies can change. CEC says its home-delivery list is closed, so do not travel expecting that option.

If someone lives in Broward and cannot safely shop or prepare food, Meals on Wheels South Florida describes home-delivered meals for adults over 60 who are homebound, recovering from illness, or unable to cook. The organization also provides friendly visits and wellness checks. Call (954) 731-8770 to confirm eligibility, menus or diets, fees, and a possible start date; the website does not publish a general price.

For hot meals and company outside the home, Broward’s Area Agency on Aging lists congregate meal sites in several cities; some offer transportation. Its local helpline, 954-745-9779, can explain eligibility and locations. Hollywood has neighborhood centers and providers, but a county service should not be described as a city-run program.

Before calling, note the person’s age, address, mobility, whether they live alone, who prepares meals, and whether they are recovering from surgery. Ask whether registration is required, what income or residency proof is accepted, whether there is a fee, and how long assessment may take. For personal care, respite, or homemaking, request a county assessment; do not assume a food program also provides in-home assistance.

Medicare does not cover most long-term custodial care, such as daily help with bathing, dressing, or meals when skilled nursing is not needed. Florida and county programs use different criteria, and Medicaid may cover long-term services for people who meet financial and functional rules. The federal Eldercare Locator can identify the right Area Agency on Aging if someone moves outside Broward.
