Ohio created this award for children of veterans who died or became severely disabled in service during a covered war or conflict. It serves Ohio residents pursuing an associate or bachelor’s degree full-time at an eligible institution. Age and qualifying service matter; not every veteran’s relative meets the legal criteria.

Ohio law allows tuition and general fees to be waived at eligible public institutions, but the board may reduce the percentage if funding is insufficient; at private institutions, the grant is calculated from the average value of public scholarships in the prior year. Do not budget a past cycle’s figure as a guaranteed amount. The current form is for 2027–28 and sets May 15, 2027, as the deadline; later applications are considered for a subsequent award year.

The file requires a completed application, DD-214, VA benefits letter, and student acknowledgement; documents must show qualifying service dates and, where applicable, an overall disability rating of at least 60%. New and enrolled students can ask their school for help, but each applicant must meet residency and full-time requirements.

The board approves annual funding levels around late July, and colleges wait at least 15 days after a term starts to request payment. Do not budget the award as money available on the first day of class. Keep copies, verify the college participates, and ask how to manage the bill while payment is processed.

Before accepting, request an individual estimate showing aid applied first, residual tuition, mandatory fees, and indirect costs. Confirm residency, credits, renewal, deadlines, and documents with the official program office; keep a copy and submission confirmation. If your situation is unclear, get a written answer from the campus before committing to tuition or housing.

Read the program profile and official FAFSA guide; ask the college for an individual balance review.

Bottom line

Compare net cost and excluded charges before committing; the financial-aid office confirms eligibility and the final balance.
