For members of the Ohio National Guard, the Ohio National Guard Scholarship Program (ONGSP) can turn military service into a practical route to college funding. The Guard says it covers tuition for programs leading to an associate or bachelor’s degree, nursing diplomas, and certain certificates, credentials, or licenses at participating institutions. Approved career programs may also qualify, so verify both the school and the exact course before planning enrollment.
The payment rule depends on the institution. At participating public colleges, the award may cover 100% of eligible tuition charges; at participating private schools, the cap is based on the average tuition charged by Ohio’s public universities. State law defines tuition and identifies costs outside it, including room, board, and laboratory charges. Ask the bursar for a written estimate separating tuition, fees, and other expenses: “tuition covered” does not mean the entire college bill will be zero.
The program is primarily for enlisted members of the Ohio Army or Air National Guard who remain in good standing throughout the academic term. Official guidance requires a high-school diploma or GED, no previously earned bachelor’s degree, enrollment at an approved school, and at least three semester or two quarter credits. A unit commander determines good standing using factors such as attendance, physical fitness, and disciplinary status. A limited statutory exception also exists for former members with qualifying deployment time.
The benefit is measured in academic units: the Guard lists 48 units for enlistments of three to five years and 96 for a six-year commitment. Applications are handled by academic term rather than as an automatic award for every future semester. Before applying, the program advises members to seek any qualifying Federal Tuition Assistance or Credentialing Assistance first; those funds are applied before ONGSP. The exact sequence and remaining balance depend on federal aid and the college bill.
Start with the official list of approved schools and programs and speak with the unit education staff. Then request a student account in the ONGSP portal; once it is approved, a PIN is sent to activate the account and submit an application. Applications may be filed through the school’s final no-penalty add/drop date, but the Guard recommends applying early and allowing up to 60 days for review when possible. An early application may remain pending, and students may need to confirm their intent to attend when 60 days remain before the term begins.
Before accepting charges or changing your credit load, verify three things separately: the school is on the approved list, the exact degree or credential program is authorized, and you have enough benefit units for that term. Ask the unit to confirm your application status and the college how it will post Federal Tuition Assistance, ONGSP, and other benefits.
Before applying, confirm that the school and program participate, check cycle requirements and dates, keep a copy and submission receipt, and ask how the award coordinates with FAFSA and other benefits. Do not budget funds that have not been awarded.
When comparing options, identify whether the benefit is a scholarship, grant, tuition exemption, or loan: not all aid must be repaid or applies to the same charges. Ask the college for a written estimate after FAFSA and other awards, check renewal and academic-progress rules, and do not accept a loan thinking it is a scholarship.
Read the program profile and the federal FAFSA guide; confirm with the administrator how the aid coordinates.
