Next NC simplifies part of North Carolina college aid by combining a state scholarship with federal Pell for undergraduate students with financial need. It is grant aid, not a loan. Funds can apply beyond tuition to allowable cost-of-attendance items such as books, food, and housing.
Students must qualify for North Carolina in-state tuition, pursue an approved diploma, certificate, or degree without a prior bachelor’s degree, and take at least six credits per term. For the 2026–27 combined minimum, the site lists an SAI of $7,500 or less and family adjusted gross income of $80,000 or less: at least $3,000 at a community college or $5,000 in the UNC System.
The figure is the combined value of Next NC and Pell, not necessarily the Next NC amount alone. The actual award depends on FAFSA data, school, credits, tuition, and funds. Part-time students receive a prorated amount. Tell financial aid if your course load changes or you receive outside aid because the package may be recalculated.
There is no separate Next NC application: file the FAFSA early and include the college code. For 2026–27, priority dates were June 1 for UNC and August 15 for community colleges; both have passed by October 12. Later files are reviewed in received order if funding remains. Use the institution’s aid portal to accept and clear tasks.
Before accepting an aid package, compare your individual notice with the bill and ask what happens if you change enrollment, major, or campus. Read the program profile and consult the administering agency; your institution’s financial-aid office confirms your individual determination.

Information checked on October 12, 2026 against official sources. Deadlines for the 2026–27 cycle have passed for several programs; they are identified as past dates where relevant. Eligibility does not guarantee funding: confirm the academic year, your file, and net cost with the program and your campus financial-aid office.
The benefit is calculated with Pell: compare the full package and confirm campus priority dates for the next FAFSA cycle.
